Pipe Thruster
India's first indigenous pipe thruster — proprietary TESPL design, 150T to 750T.
What It Is
TESPL is a pipe thruster contractor in India, using its own indigenous equipment for uphill HDD crossings, long pullbacks and high-friction ground conditions. A pipe thruster is an auxiliary pushing device used in conjunction with an HDD drill rig to supplement pullback capacity. When ground conditions — high friction, uphill gradients, waterlogged terrain, or large pipe diameter — cause pullback loads to exceed the rig's rated capacity, the pipe thruster provides continuous additional push force to complete the installation. TESPL's pipe thruster is a proprietary system, designed and fabricated entirely in-house — the first of its kind in India.
How It Works — 3 Steps
Rig Pullback Initiated
The HDD drill rig initiates pullback of the product pipe string through the completed bore from the entry side.

Pipe Thruster Deployed
The pipe thruster is positioned and grips the product pipe string. Hydraulic rams apply continuous push force into the bore, synchronised with the rig's pullback operation.

Continuous Push to Completion
The system maintains uninterrupted hydraulic push throughout — eliminating the stop-start load cycles of conventional thrusters, reducing stress on the pipe coating, and accelerating completion.

Eliminates stop-start load cycles of conventional thrusters
- TESPL developed India's first indigenous pipe thruster — entirely designed, engineered, and fabricated in-house.
- The system was developed in response to project conditions that standard equipment could not accommodate, and has since been deployed on multiple crossings where conventional HDD pullback alone was insufficient.
- The key technical distinction is the bed-mounted continuous push design.
- Conventional thrusters operate in discrete strokes, creating repeated load cycles that stress the pipe coating and slow the operation.
- The TESPL system applies uninterrupted hydraulic force throughout the pullback, eliminating those cycles.
- The thruster has been used on uphill crossing profiles, in waterlogged and swampy terrain, on large-diameter installations, and as a contingency measure on long-distance crossings.
- It is available as a standalone deployment on any HDD project, independent of rig type or size.
